KYC Verification — What It Is and Why Apps Ask
What KYC means, which documents are normally required, why it is requested at withdrawal rather than signup, and how to keep your documents safe.

KYC — Know Your Customer — is identity verification. Almost every real-money gaming app in India requires it before it will pay out, and being asked for documents is normal rather than a warning sign.
Knowing what is reasonable to hand over, and what is not, is the useful part.
Why apps askWhy apps ask
Three reasons, all legitimate:
Legal obligation. Operators handling real money are required to verify customer identity under anti-money-laundering rules. This is not optional for them.
Age verification. Real-money gaming is 18+. KYC is how that is enforced beyond a checkbox.
Fraud and account protection. It confirms that the person withdrawing is the person who deposited, which is what stops someone else emptying your account.
What is normally requestedWhat is normally requested
Typically one identity document and one payment detail:
- PAN card — commonly required, because winnings above certain thresholds are subject to tax deduction at source
- Aadhaar, or another government photo ID — passport, voter ID or driving licence usually accepted
- A bank account or UPI ID in your own name
- Occasionally a selfie or short liveness check
The name must match across all of them. A mismatch between your gaming account, your documents and your bank account is the most common reason a withdrawal stalls.
Why they ask at withdrawal not signupWhy they ask at withdrawal, not signup
This surprises people and it looks suspicious. It usually is not.
Most operators let you deposit and play with minimal detail, then verify at the point of withdrawal. It reduces friction at signup — but it also means the first time you ask for money, you hit a verification step you did not expect.
Complete KYC after your first deposit rather than waiting. It removes the delay before it can affect a withdrawal, and it costs nothing to do early.
What is not reasonableWhat is not reasonable
Verification is normal. These are not, and any of them is a reason to stop:
- Asking for your UPI PIN, card CVV, net-banking password, or an OTP. No legitimate operator ever needs these. Anyone requesting them is attempting fraud, regardless of what the app looks like.
- Requesting documents over WhatsApp, Telegram or email rather than inside the app. Upload through the app's own verification screen only.
- Asking for a payment to "release" or "verify" a withdrawal. Verification is never something you pay for. This is one of the most common scams in this category — the requested amount is usually small relative to the balance being held, which is what makes people pay it.
- Requiring documents in someone else's name.
If any of these happen with an app listed in our directory, please tell us. We remove listings that behave this way.
Keeping your documents safeKeeping your documents safe
- Upload only through the app's own KYC screen
- Cover or mask any part of a document not needed for the check where the app allows it
- Never reuse your banking or email password on a gaming app
- Be sceptical of any "support agent" contacting you first and asking for documents — contact support yourself, through the app
Tax on winningsTax on winnings
Winnings from online gaming in India are subject to tax deducted at source, which is why PAN details are usually required. Deduction is handled by the operator at withdrawal.

Common questions
Why do gaming apps ask for KYC?
Anti-money-laundering rules require operators handling real money to verify identity, it enforces the 18+ age limit, and it confirms the person withdrawing is the person who deposited.
What documents are needed for KYC?
Usually a PAN card, a government photo ID such as Aadhaar or a passport, and a bank account or UPI ID in your own name. The name must match across all of them.
Is it safe to give an app my Aadhaar or PAN?
Uploading identity documents through an app's own verification screen is normal. What is never legitimate: being asked for a UPI PIN, card CVV, net-banking password or OTP, being asked to send documents over WhatsApp or email, or being asked to pay a fee to verify.
Why is KYC asked at withdrawal instead of signup?
Most operators reduce signup friction by verifying only when money leaves. Complete it after your first deposit rather than waiting — it removes the most common cause of a delayed withdrawal.
